How to charge an iPad over a standard USB connection
Plug an iPhone or iPod into pretty much any computer with a USB port, and you should get enough power to charge your phone or media player. Try the same thing with an iPad and your results are likely to be a bit less predictable. That’s because an iPad needs more power to charge and most older PCs ship with USB ports that simply don’t pump out enough juice.

Newer Macbooks do provide enough power to let you use your iPad while it’s charging. Most older computers will charge your iPad slowly if the screen is turned off, but if you turn on the display you’ll probably see that the tablet isn’t charging.
Up until now, it seemed like the simplest solution was to plug your iPad into a computer only when you needed to sync data — and to plug it into a wall jack when you needed to charge. But it looks like there are firmware updates that let you tweak computers with Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte motherboards so that they provide more power to USB ports — enough power to charge an iPad.
Your results may vary, and of course you may run the risk of shorting your motherboard if you don’t know what you’re doing. But if you’re willing to take that risk, you can find download links from all three motherboard manufacturers at Engadget. You can see a video of an iPad being charged from several different laptop USB ports after the break. That includes a Sony Vaio P mini-laptop which isn’t exactly a high power device.

i would like one for reading in bed or making beats while gelling on the couch. its just glorified multimedia device….i’ll wait a couple of years for updates and maybe by then another device(Android Tablet) will be available. its a hot device but i can’t see the justification of spend over $500 for a giant ipod touch when i already have an ipod touch. agree or disagree?
Most of these reasons are just “air” you say you want them or that it failed for not having them but really when you have them you probably don’t even utilize them

Wonder what your opinion is of the iPad now that over 3 million have been sold as of today. I use mine for reading, schoolwork, typing papers, and social media. Not every product is for everyone, well accept for the over 3 million like me who enjoy using it. Next time it would be better that you post a review after you have facts, because this vid, makes you look ridiculous. Oh….I think I just heard another iPad being sold, tsk.
@mdtrue Im not angry. I just feel the need to speak up when people needlessly talk isht about a product. If you don’t like it, you don’t want it, all you simply have to do is not buy it. Anyone who posts something online, or publicly somehow, just to bash something because it doesn’t happen to scratch all of their particular itches, well, then they are fair game, in my opinion.
Ive used a Droid before. I don’t like it. But I feel secure & busy enough not to feel the need to go out and bash it

@simonsex Try to print this out from you ipad, or put it on a flash drive. These are simple task for netbook owners. Try to skype video chat with anybody. My netbook has a 160 GB harddrive. You overpaid and feel good about it. I can only be happy for you. YOU ARE SOOOOO COOL! You must not work in the computer industry! If so what can you do productive on your Ipad. I can run quickbooks on the go, word docs, photoshop and more.

yes the ipad sold a crazy amount of units but what has it done for anyone really Im a graphic designer and a possible use for it could be as a digital portfolio I guess the drawing app that adobe have on it isn’t great the accuracy is abit of and the fact u cant use a stylus renders it abit useless as an actual drawing tablet. Overall I dont think its a complete fail but its not revolutionary and alot of those sales were just hype.

Like – where have you been all the years? The ipod revolutionised the way people use Mp3’s. Apple made the first commercially viable laptop which also changed the face of personal computing. While microsoft was muckig around with unstable operating systems, the Mac dominated computer use in the creative industry especially with groundbreaking techno, eg Mac was the first commercially available 64bit computer.
